The University of California, Berkeley has a comprehensive report on their landscape heritage plan
here.
The University of California, Berkeley is utilizing this landscape heritage plan to "preserve the historic legacy" of the Classical Core of campus. The landscaping of the Classical Core has been personally touched the Picturesque, Beau-Arts, and Modern Eras. The Picturesque Era boasted a natural style evolving from the 18th Century European preference of "nature" over "artifice". The Beaux-Arts Era design was utilized to express America's "coming of age" as a "great international power" in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Finally, the Modern Era work was characterized by simplicity and an "outdoor livability" feature. The University of California, Berkeley is utilizing this landscape heritage to preserve the reflection of the landscape designs, as well as the influences of the different eras, that have graced the University of California, Berkeley's campus over its 150 year lifetime.
