What is the relationship between campus heritage preservation and sustainability?

  • Rating: 5 after 1 vote
It never used to be easy being green, but the times they are a-changin' as advertisements tout companies that have gotten environmental religion and universities present their credentials. Are there college and university campuses that have consciously promoted campus heritage preservation as a form of sustainable (or 'green') design? I have heard many people suggest getting rid of old, 'inefficient' campus buildings in favor or new 'green' buildings, but very few defend the historic (or even just old) buildings as a form of 'sunk' natural and human capital. Historic buildings certainly possess value for their historic and architectural merits, but I am also interested in whether ecological economics can also be enlisted in their cause when addressing less than sympathetic audiences. The National Trust for Historic Preservation's Pocantico Principles might offer a resource in this regard.
